  • Swimming across Sun Moon Lake - Grade 9 (3.3 kilometers)
  • Cycling around Taiwan - Grade 10 ( 1,000 kilometers/12 days)
  • Attending the Cultural Exchange Program - Grade 9

G8 Three Kingdoms Camping

Kang Chiao’s Three Kingdom Activity is a two-day and one-night camping event that is centered on our grade 8 curriculum and Kang Chiao’s GREAT school mission. The main theme is based on the well-known historical Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." Students can experience and hone their skills in the role of leaders and team players, teamwork, conflict management, allocation of resources, problem-solving through the integration and application of active, relevant learning, experiential learning cycle models and team development models through this activity. The activity starts with each homeroom as a unit being assigned as one of the Three-Kingdom military commanders. Homerooms whose assigned commanders belong to the same kingdom ally and communicate with each other. Eventually, the kingdoms aim to take over each other. Each homeroom is assigned to defend a city and will elect a “military advisor” to allocate and distribute people in different stages within the city. To take over another group’s city, the challenger needs to answer questions correctly in each stage, and those questions consist of knowledge learned from throughout the semester. Through active learning, we aim to motivate students to participate and enjoy the learning process.

G8 He-Huan Summit Ascent

Every year, the 8th graders embark on a four-day hike, ascending 5 of the 7 peaks of the He-Huan Summits. Prior to the trip, students will be required to complete 6 training sessions to ensure adequate skills sets and fitness. On the second day of the hike, students will complete the east peak and north peak ascents. With a total distance of 13km, the students will experience exhaustion during the process, but their perseverance will be rewarded with the best views on the peak.

G9 Sun Moon Lake

In September, our ninth graders started the challenge of the Sun Moon Lake Swim, from Zhaowu Pier to Yidashao Wharf with a total distance of 3,300 meters. Prior to this challenge, students spent 2 years in the pool in their regular swimming classes and open water practices to prepare for the open water event. During the swim, each student will carry their own rescue tube, and each team will have a large floatation device that students can rest on. Due to the impact of Typhoon Mangkhut that disrupted the swimming route, the swim was even more challenging. The entire group of faculty and students finished the race by 11 am, completing this challenge. Not only did the students create lifelong memories, they also learned the importance of teamwork and perseverance.

G9 Exploration Trip

Our grade 9 students and their teachers spent 12 magical days experiencing ancient Chinese culture, one of the richest histories of thousands of years, with its passionate people and endless stories hidden in the traces of the ancient traditions. This was indeed a great journey. Our group began in Taiwan and followed the Spice Road to Xi’an in Shanxi, Dunhuang in Gansu, and finally, Lanzhou. Over the centuries, massive changes have occurred, yet much remains the same. Students were impressed by the wisdom of their ancestors with their amazing designs, from Bronze swords to the enormous scale of the Terracotta Army of the Qin Dynasty. In the Han Dynasty, Zhang Qian (a civil servant in the Han Dynasty, who was the only person willing to travel to the aid of Emperor Wu and explore the west) began an exploration journey to the West along the Hexi Corridor culminating in the Han Empire. The thousand-member conference hosted by the Emperor Yang of Sui in Yanzhi Mountain fostered the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty and made the Silk Road one of the main foci of the economy and world civilization at that time. The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang left students in awe and amazement with their enormous scale and vivid murals. Students witnessed the development of cave wall art, through the production of pigment, resulting in these masterpieces.

G10 Cycling Around Taiwan

The greatest journey that the 10th graders embark on is cycling around Taiwan. In April, G10 students commenced cycling from Xiugang Campus, passing through Beiyi road (an important route from Taipei to Yilan), Hualien, Taitung, and Shouka (the highest peak of the trip). Students stopped at the Kaohsiung Confucius Temple for a “coming of age” ceremony. Then they continued northward and ended at Qingshan Campus. The Cycling Around Taiwan activity lasted for 12 days and students pedaled nearly 1,000 km. It is not only a trip for fitness and health, but also allows students an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their own culture. Students used their experience to give back to the community, and pedaled through their own personal obstacles. Students learned to be more grateful, more resilient to challenges, and find their own personal value in this “coming of age” trip.
