Learning and Language Support

Xiugang recognizes that students enter with varying levels of academic and English language proficiency. Learning and Language Support is designed to ensure that language development does not become a barrier to academic progress.

Student performance data is reviewed regularly to identify learners who require additional support. When needed, targeted intervention is coordinated through the Learning Center in collaboration with subject teachers and counselors. Support focuses on strengthening academic language, study strategies, and subject comprehension while maintaining grade-level expectations.

Language development is integrated within the curriculum rather than separated from it. Following the IB MYP language acquisition approach, students build academic language through structured scaffolding, disciplinary literacy, and translanguaging strategies where appropriate. This allows learners to access complex concepts while continuing to develop proficiency in English.

Support may include small-group instruction, focused skill workshops, and guided reinforcement aligned with classroom learning. The goal is independence and confidence, not simplification of content.

Learning and Language Support operates as part of a coordinated system. Students are monitored, supported, and reviewed so that academic growth remains steady across pathways.
