English Program

Pathways Overview

The English program is structured as a clear progression from Grades 7 through 12, allowing students to develop academic language, literary analysis, and advanced communication skills at an appropriate pace.

Grades 7–10 follow the IB Middle Years Programme framework and are organized into two strands.

English Language Acquisition
(Phases 3–5)

English Language Acquisition (Phases 3–5) supports students who are continuing to strengthen academic English. Instruction focuses on building precision in reading, writing, listening, and speaking while engaging students in concept-based units. As proficiency increases, students move toward greater independence in mainstream academic contexts.

English Language and Literature
(Emerging, Regular, and Honors)

English Language and Literature (Emerging, Regular, and Honors) is designed for students ready for sustained literary and textual study. Across levels, students analyze a range of literary works and non-literary texts, develop structured analytical writing, and refine oral communication skills. The Honors level provides additional depth and rigor in preparation for advanced coursework in the senior years.

Placement and movement between levels are guided by demonstrated readiness and sustained performance, ensuring that students are both supported and appropriately challenged.

In Grades 11–12, students select from three academic pathways aligned with their university goals.

AP English Courses

AP English Courses offer a college-level experience centered on rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and literary interpretation. Students read complex texts closely, construct evidence-based essays, and write with clarity and precision in preparation for university expectations.

IB English Language and Literature

IB English A (Standard Level and Higher Level) is designed for students with strong academic English proficiency. The course develops advanced textual analysis, comparative interpretation, and critical thinking across literary works and non-literary texts within global contexts.

IB English B (Language Acquisition, Standard Level and Higher Level) supports multilingual learners in strengthening academic English within the IB Diploma framework. Students develop analytical reading, structured writing, and confident oral communication while exploring cultural perspectives through language study.

English Electives

Senior High English electives adopt the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Based on demonstrated proficiency, students may take English Language Arts, American Literature, or World Literature. These courses emphasize close reading, analytical writing, research, and academic discussion within a structured English-medium environment, supporting diverse university pathways.

This pathway structure ensures continuity from language development to advanced literary study, preparing students for success in IB, AP, and university-level programs.
